This was my final project at Oxbow. It is based on the music of the spheres, a theory about the harmony of sound and planets developed by the mathematician Pythagoras. He believed that the most harmonious number is 5, and that the most harmonious shape is a pentagram. I intentionally included 5 spheres, and accidentally included a pentagram. Due to this, the theme of the piece became about randomness vs. order. Some successful elements were planned, others coincidence. Pythagoras' theory was a method to order the universe, but could also all be coincidence. humans are continuously trying to order the universe, which in fact may be completely random. Or perhaps there are aspects of both. I wanted the piece to be interactive, but the tensioned cables were too dangerous, so I created a song by playing and tapping the cables with a cello bow. I played the song on speakers within the installation, and people could walk in and out.
